As an Independent Researcher

London's Urban Jungle: Jamrach's Menagerie and the Victorian Exotic Animal Trade. An exhibition in the Natural History Gallery at The Horniman Museum and Gardens. 19th December to 21st February 2016. Online material can still be found by following the links below:

Jamrach's Exotic Menagerie: The Noah's Ark of the East End. Abstract: Building on the legacy of the menagerist's and showmen of the eighteenth century, Jamrach's menagerie was seen as "animal HQ" and supplied its customers with all their animal needs; whether a pet, a scientific specimen, or the newest 'star' destined for the zoological gardens. This talk will focus on the history of the exotic animal trade, paying particular attention to Charles Jamrach's animal emporium and the insight it can offer into this curious industry. The Hunterian Museum, London. 8th September, 2015.

'I'll take a Tiger to go' Charles Jamrach's exotic menagerie and the Victorian metropolis - a research paper presented at The Animal in the Archive, an animal histories symposium hosted by the University of Manchester and Chetham's Library, March 27th 2015.

Projects/Events completed as part of my MA in Public History at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Oral History Interviews - For this project I was fortunate to conduct oral history interviews with two zookeepers. Having written the questions for the interview, this process gave me unique insight into the history of the profession, its development and the contribution of those men throughout their careers.

Charles Jamrach's Exotic Menagerie and the Victorian Wild Animal Trade' - an online, image led exhibition article created for the Animals and Empire exhibition at Animalhistorymuseum.org. A link is supplied below:

World War Two: The Animal's War - a 30 minute radio programme that examined the experience of animals during WW2. The programme looked at the use of animals on the frontline and their experience back in Britain as people's domestic pets and in zoos. I was fortunate to interview a number of leading experts on this topic and produced a broadcast standard radio programme.

Wanted: Dead or Alive - a 3 panel pop-up exhibition focused on the history of the wild animal trade, beginning with the Tower of London Menagerie and ending with the emergence of the nineteenth century 'middle men' who went on to control the trade.

'I'll take a Tiger to go' Charles Jamrach's exotic menagerie and the Victorian metropolis - a research paper presented at August's PubSci event based on my undergraduate dissertation research.

Animals at LMA: Who Let the Lions Out - An afternoon event held at LMA that looked at the presence of animals within their archive. This included a number of guest speakers and a chance for visitors to look first hand at the archive material.
